As spring season starts winding down, something we’ve been asked to help with is to make it harder for people to screenshot images from the gallery. And in the back of my mind are conversations with some wiser studio owners saying, “Those folks were never your customers anyway.” But the thought of someone taking proofs still feels wrong and we should to do something about it.
In hhimagehost you have an option to automatically apply a translucent watermark to cover the images in your galleries. Today the default is a copyright ©️ symbol and diagonal hash marks as a step and repeat watermark across an image. But AI-powered watermark removal services that can do a decent job of removing this are becoming more prevalent. What’s crazy is, there are TONS of articles about how to remove watermarks and almost none about how to prevent it. And AI keeps getting smarter.
So, we’ve been experimenting with designing a watermark that is AI resistant. I say resistant because while nothing is perfect, we want something that seems to be more difficult to remove than others. And at the same time, we don’t want something so garish that your customers aren’t able to see the beautiful portraits you’ve created. While doing some homework we found there are certain strategies that are more effective than others. For instance, some people say a watermark with red in it can help. Others say patterns make it easier on certain AI algorithms. So, we made one that works well and wanted to share it with you.
